Tenerife travel guide: what to see and how to plan your trip

For a first trip to Tenerife, it helps to group your days by area rather than combine unrelated stops. Our most detailed coverage is of the north, roadside viewpoints and historic towns. This guide brings those articles together to help you build a practical itinerary.

Rather than promise the whole of Tenerife in three days, this guide focuses on a relaxed two- to four-day road trip based in the north or the Santa Cruz–La Laguna area. It combines the coast, viewpoints and historic centres without unnecessary driving.

  • Best for: first visit, road trip, couple or relaxed family trip, viewpoints, northern coast, and heritage.
  • Less suitable if: your plan revolves only around a resort and hotel beach in the south, because that section hasn’t been covered here in the same depth yet.
  • How long to stay: between 2 and 4 days if you want to make the most of this selection of plans.
  • How to use the guide: start with an area or type of day and then go down to the specific things that interest you.

What to see in Tenerife based on the type of plan

Northern coast and easy stop for a walk or swim

For a coastal stop with plenty of character, Punta del Hidalgo is a great place to start. Enjoy a relaxed walk, see the lighthouse and take in the Atlantic views. Swim only if conditions allow. You can then continue towards Anaga or return to La Laguna at an easy pace.

Viewpoints and scenic roads

For views across the island and an easy stop on a road trip, start at Mirador de Ortuño. For more options, our guide to Tenerife’s viewpoints helps you choose stops in the north, highlands and west.

Historic center and cultural visits that are worth it

For historic towns and cultural sights, our guide to Tenerife’s monuments helps you group visits sensibly. Use it to choose what to see in La Laguna, Santa Cruz, Candelaria and La Orotava, and fit those places into your wider trip.

Places to combine in one day

One of the most common mistakes when planning Tenerife is wanting to jump from one end to the other without considering the pace of the day. The most sensible thing is usually to group by area and by type of landscape. For example, you can dedicate a day to La Laguna + heritage + northeast coast and wrap up with Punta del Hidalgo. Another day works well for TF-24 + viewpoints + climb towards the peaks, with Mirador de Ortuño as an easy stop and other viewpoints chosen according to visibility.

If you are staying in the south or planning a scenic day in the west, set aside a separate day and use our guide to Tenerife’s viewpoints to avoid spending the whole day driving. Tenerife has plenty to offer, but you do not need to see it all in one trip.

Basic 2- to 4-day route in Tenerife

  • Day 1: La Laguna and a cultural part of the northeast, finishing the afternoon in Punta del Hidalgo if you feel like some coast and a walk.
  • Day 2: La Esperanza road, stop at Mirador de Ortuño and a day of viewpoints or peaks if visibility allows.
  • Day 3: a slower-paced day of historic sights using our guide to Tenerife’s monuments, choosing only 2 or 3 meaningful stops.
  • Optional Day 4: expand the scenic part with the selection of Tenerife’s viewpoints or repeat the area that suited you the most.
